Frederick (Fred)
Hawkins is a mediator, arbitrator, and practicing trial and appellate attorney with over 25 years of
experience. He
is a former prosecutor with the Travis County Attorney's Office and prosecuted
criminal cases from 1986 to
1989. In 1989 he went to work for the Texas Attorney General's Office. As an
assistant attorney general in the highway division he represented the Texas
Department of Transportation and individual employees in personal injury and
other tort actions.
In 1993 he joined the
City
of Austin's law department as a senior trial attorney. He represented the
City of Austin, public officials, department heads, individual employees, and
police officers in
various types of litigation, including personal injury claims, employment
claims, sexual harassment
claims, premise liability claims, civil rights, excessive force and other police misconduct
claims.
He
is a frequent lecturer and trainer for the Austin Police Department and its
police academy on issues such as civil liability and supervisory liability. He
is a recommended attorney by the Austin Police Association and by the Combined
Law Enforcement Officers of Texas
(C.L.E.A.T.)
He is a mediator
and arbitrator affiliated with the Lakeside Mediation Center.
